Preparing for Your Surgery
Health Evaluation and Testing
Before surgery, you will complete a medical evaluation that may include a history and physical exam, lab work, and diagnostic testing to ensure you are safely prepared for anesthesia and surgery.
- Blood tests
- Chest X-ray
- Electrocardiogram (EKG)
- Urine test
Pre-Testing Appointment
Pre-testing may include phone-based nursing assessments and in-person lab work at approved locations. Please allow 2–4 hours if testing is completed onsite.
Preoperative Checklist
- Photo ID
- Insurance and prescription cards
- Medication and allergy list
- Advance directive (if applicable)
- Medical device ID (pacemaker/AICD)
Important: Certain medical devices such as pacemakers or AICDs may need to be adjusted prior to surgery.
Medications and Insurance
Provide a full list of all medications including prescriptions, supplements, and over-the-counter drugs. Verify insurance coverage and pre-authorization before your procedure.
Before Surgery
- Arrange transportation to and from the hospital
- Have someone stay with you for 24 hours after surgery
- Avoid alcohol and smoking
- Follow all fasting instructions
- Get adequate rest the night before surgery
Day of Surgery
- No food, drink, gum, or candy
- Take approved medications only with a small sip of water
- No jewelry, makeup, or body piercings
- Wear comfortable clothing
Checking In for Surgery
Arrive on time with your ID and insurance cards. You will meet your care team including nurses, anesthesiologists, and your surgeon before your procedure.
Multiple safety checks are performed to ensure accuracy and patient safety at every step.
After You Leave the Hospital
Recovery at home can take time. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and allow your body to heal.
- Get plenty of rest
- Avoid strenuous activity, driving, or working until cleared
- Take medications as prescribed
Follow-Up Appointments
You may need a follow-up visit about 10 days after surgery to assess healing and remove stitches or staples.
Medications
Take all medications as directed. Contact your physician for refills or questions about your prescription plan.
When to Call Your Doctor
- Fever of 101°F or higher
- Fever with chills
- Redness spreading beyond incision
- Drainage, swelling, or wound opening
Emergency: If you cannot reach your doctor or are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
