Protecting skin from sun exposure in childhood is crucial for preventing skin damage and reducing the risk of skin cancer later in life. Summer in the South Bay often means kids spend lots of hours in the sun and at the beach. Here are my tips for protecting your children’s skin from harmful UV rays:

  1. Apply, Apply, Apply – At least 15-30 minutes before your child goes outside put on sunscreen wherever their clothes don’t cover - especially the nose, ears, neck, hands, feet, and lips. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF value of 30-50 or higher. (Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against UVA and UVB rays, two types of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.) Reapply at least every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

For Babies Under 6 Months:

Avoid using sunscreen on infants younger than 6 months old. Instead, keep them out of direct sunlight and use protective clothing, hats, and plenty of shade.

  1. Cover Up – Limit the time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense. When outdoors, children should wear sun protective clothing, such as rash guards, and broad-brim hats. Sunglasses are also a good idea, be sure to wear sunglasses with a UV400 rating or “100% UV protection” on the label.

  1. Teach Sun Safety Early - Kids get used to wearing protective clothing and sunblock if it’s a normal part of their routine. Encourage habits like wearing hats and applying sunscreen regularly.

  1. Know Your Risk Factors – Everyone is susceptible to sun damage and sunburn. However, children with pale skin, blonde, red, or light brown hair are at higher risk of sunburn and damage from UV rays.

For more information on sun safety and skin protection, you can refer to resources from reputable health organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Skin Cancer Foundation.
