What Is Insulin Resistance?
Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose (sugar) from your bloodstream into your cells, where it’s used for energy. Normally when we consume food, particularly carbohydrates, our body responds by releasing insulin in our blood stream. After carbohydrates are digested and converted into sugar it is absorbed into our blood. At this point, insulin opens the cells and allows sugar to exit the bloodstream.
When you have insulin resistance, everything is effectively the same, however your cells don’t respond efficiently to insulin. As a result:
- Glucose stays in the bloodstream
- The pancreas then releases more insulin to compensate
- Blood insulin levels remain chronically high
If left untreated, this can lead to type 2 diabetes and difficulty managing body weight.
How Insulin Resistance Affects Weight
Insulin is not just a blood sugar hormone. It’s also a fat-storage hormone. When insulin levels are consistently high, several things happen that make weight loss harder:
