Torrance Memorial Medical Center Earns Magnet with Distinction

TORRANCE, Calif., April 23, 2026 – Torrance Memorial Medical Center has been awarded Magnet® with Distinction™, a designation recognizing the highest-performing Magnet organizations worldwide. The medical center is one of only three hospitals in Los Angeles County to achieve this honor and marks its fourth Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

National Recognition for Nursing Excellence

Earning Magnet with Distinction places Torrance Memorial among the top healthcare organizations in the United States. The designation reflects excellence in nursing practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a strong culture of patient-centered care.

“The Magnet certification process promotes positive change within the organization through nursing input and quality improvement,” said Maricarmen Luhrsen, DNP, RN, NE-BC, Magnet Program Director at Torrance Memorial. “Our nurses are fully engaged in improving patient safety and satisfaction, and receiving Magnet with Distinction is a tremendous honor.”

Rigorous Standards for Magnet Recognition

To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must complete a rigorous evaluation process that includes written documentation, an electronic application, and an on-site review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

Hospitals must reapply every four years, demonstrating sustained excellence in nursing practice, leadership, and patient outcomes.

“The Magnet program is about nurse empowerment and recognizing bedside contributions,” said Mary Wright, RN, MSN, CENP, Senior Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “This distinction reflects the strength, adaptability, and clinical excellence of our nursing teams.”

Benefits of Magnet Recognition

Research shows Magnet recognition is associated with:

  • Higher patient satisfaction with nursing communication and discharge information
  • Lower 30-day mortality and reduced failure-to-rescue rates
  • Higher nurse job satisfaction
  • Lower nurse turnover intent
