Posted on Mar 23, 2020 By Makenzie Curtis, RDN and Kristen Hung, MPH, RDN This week of Nutrition Month, our focus is on eating right, bite by bite. Small changes build upon each other and are not only achievable, but can be collectively significant in helping us move toward our health-related goals. Consider trying a few of the tips below to get started with bite sized changes for your health! Decrease dining out by one episode per week Spend five minutes a day doing pushups, sit ups or stretches Drink a glass of water before eating your meal Try to include three colors of fruits and vegetables at a meal Replace one processed snack food a day with a fresh fruit or vegetable Try cooking one more meal at home weekly Eat off a smaller plate Put your fork down between bites Go to sleep 30 minutes earlier Replace your sweetened beverage for regular or sparkling water Put your phone away during meals Try an open-faced sandwich with one slice of bread instead of two Commit to taking the stairs at work, if not the whole way then at least a flight or two Learn what to look for on a nutrition label Pack your lunch for tomorrow Decrease your sitting time by standing more and taking stretch breaks Choose a bread that is whole grain and has at least 3g fiber Substitute a lean protein like chicken, fish or tofu for red meat once a week Wait 20 minutes before serving yourself a second helping Try a plant based meal once a week If you have questions or would like further information on leading a healthier lifestyle, contact one of our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists at the Outpatient Medical Nutrition Therapy Office or our Diabetes Self-Management Program located in the Torrance Memorial Specialty Center, 2841 Lomita Blvd., Suite 335, Torrance.
