Does Too Much Sugar Cause Diabetes?
A diet high in calories from any source (including sugar) leads to weight
gain. Excess weight increases your risk of type 2 diabetes. Research has
also shown a link between drinking sugar beverages and type 2 diabetes.
In short, limiting intake of sugary beverages and decreasing intake of
excess calories from any source including sugar can help manage weight
and decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Natural vs. Added Sugar
Some sugars are naturally occurring in food (fruit, dairy). Others are
added to food to increase sweetness. The American Heart Association (AHA)
notes that too much added sugar can increase the risk of death from cardiovascular
disease. Most Americans consume about 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day!
The AHA recommends:
-
No more than
6 teaspoons of added sugar for most women
-
No more than
9 teaspoons of added sugar for most men
