TORRANCE, CA, May 22, 2017 – Torrance Memorial Medical Center has earned a 4-star patient experience
rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as a
result of patient responses provided on the Hospital Consumer Assessment
of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey. While no hospitals
in Los Angeles County earned 5 stars this quarter, Torrance Memorial is
one of only four hospitals in the County to achieve a 4-star rating for
patient experience during this time period placing it in the top 5 percent
of hospitals in the county.
HCAHPS is a 32- item survey used to measure patients’ perceptions
of their hospital experience. The time period for the current HCAHPS Summary
Star Rating is for patients discharged July, 2015 – June, 2016.
CMS reports patient survey results and star ratings on their Hospital
Compare website at medicare.gov/hospitalcompare. All hospitals that participate
in the HCAHPS Survey and have at least 100 completed surveys in a 12-month
reporting period are eligible to receive HCAHPS Star Ratings. This ensures
statistical reliability for HCAHPS performance measurement. During this
reporting period 3,499 hospitals were eligible for HCAHPS Star Ratings.
“I am extremely proud that we have earned a 4-star patient experience
rating from CMS,” said Craig Leach, president and CEO, Torrance
Memorial Medical Center. “It is all thanks to employees, physicians,
and volunteers at Torrance Memorial and the effort they put into making
each encounter with patients caring and thoughtful.”
CMS created the HCAHPS Star Ratings in order to enable consumers to more
quickly and easily access patient experience of care information that
is provided on the Hospital Compare website. Star Ratings also allow consumers
to easily compare hospitals by providing a quick summary of each HCAHPS
measure in a star-rating format that is increasingly familiar to consumers.
CMS updates HCAHPS Star Ratings quarterly.
