Prostate is the second most common cancer among American men, ranking just
behind skin cancer. One in six men will be diagnosed in their lifetime
with prostate cancer. It’s also one of the most detectable and treatable
forms of cancer, thanks to a test called PSA, which measures the amount
of prostate specific antigen in your blood. While the PSA test is somewhat
controversial, it—along with regular rectal exams—is still
the best way to detect the cancer early.
November is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, deemed “Movember”
and it kicks off with Torrance Memorial’s “Pints for Prostate”
on October 27. Held at the Shade Hotel in Redondo Beach, the event draws
on the “universal language of beer” to encourage men to get
regular tests and exams. Torrance Memorial is partnering with the National
Movember Foundation and the South Bay Mo Bros team (which last year raised
the most money nationally).
Torrance Memorial’s Judith Gassner, senior director, development
and principle gifts, says, “We’re thrilled to be partnering
with South Bay Mo Bros to raise awareness and education for men’s
health. The goal is to increase early detection, diagnosis and treatment
... and reduce preventable deaths, one Mo Bro at a time.”
Local doctors, including Torrance Memorial’s David Wallis, MD, Timothy
Lesser, MD, and Garrett Matsunaga, MD, will be on hand to talk about the
latest research, give prostate health tips and answer questions.
The event is $20 with donations going to the Movember Foundation. Registration
is required.
