Being more active and eating healthier are always top the list of New Year’s
resolutions. Consuming fewer calories, making informed choices and being
active are key to being fit and healthy, and reducing your risk of chronic
disease. You may have these fitness goals in mind for the year, but it
might be difficult and discouraging if you don’t know where or how
to begin. Here are some apps that can give you some fitness inspiration:
My Fitness Pal
If you’ve tried to lose weight you’ve probably heard of MyFitnessPal.
It’s been called the best diet tracker available for free. The app
allows you to track your food intake as well as your weight loss progress.
When you join, you enter your goal weight, date of birth, current weight,
gender, height and rough activity level and MyFitnessPal calculates the
amount of calories you need as well as how much fat, cholesterol, sodium,
carbohydrates and protein you need daily. It also plots helpful graphs
showing your weekly calorie intake and your current progress. The app
is free and easy to use. Whether you’re using it to lose weight,
maintain your weight or just to try and stay healthy, MyFitnessPal may
be a great weight loss tool for you.
Fooducate is a one-stop shop for diet and fitness. Breaking down ingredient
lists and nutritional values can be confusing and overwhelming. However,
Fooducate takes the guesswork out of nutrition labels and shows you which
foods are healthy, and those to avoid entirely. Fooducate will alert you
to these potentially-harmful chemicals and preservatives after a simple
scan of the bar code. Additionally, the diet and nutrition app offers
all foods a grade of A, B, C or D, based on how processed the food is,
and what and how many nutrients it contains. This app is universal to
anyone looking to lose weight and live healthy. Whether you want to lose
10 pounds or 100, this app is worth a try!
Charity Miles is straightforward and easy to use. It tracks miles for you,
and when you complete a session, the app will offer you a sponsorship
for your charity. To accept the sponsorship, you will then be asked to
share your achievements, raise awareness for your charity and to thank
your sponsors on Facebook and/or Twitter. The more miles you pile up,
the more money you will earn for your charity. Bikers earn 10 cents per
mile, walkers and runners both earn 25 cents per mile, up to a maximum
of $1,000,000. The Charity Miles app is certainly one of a kind. It encourages
you to be physically active, while simultaneously having the money you
earn be donated to a great cause. It is a great feeling to know that you
have helped others, and as an added benefit, you are getting to work out
and improve your own physical fitness.

The difference between Zombies, Run! and other running apps is that they
provide a “game-like” motivation and reward system, while
at the same time improving your running ability. The “reward”
is finding out what happens next, as opposed to earning certain badges
or stars. There are clear milestones built into the stories that track
your progress and keep you coming back! Zombies, Run! takes an activity
that you may already do (like running) and immerses you in a scenario
that entertains and rewards. You’ll talk with real actors while
running the app, setting Zombies, Run! apart from other fitness apps.
Join the Zombies, Run! community and talk about missions in real time,
much like people discuss their favorite TV shows. Community excitement
increases passion and motivation leading to success as participants meet
their fitness goals.

like a personal trainer, providing you with a personalized training experience
in real time. PEAR offers hundreds of workout possibilities, always giving
you something new to look forward to. And with the optional PEAR+ Membership,

Yonder hopes to bridge that gap between guide book and park trail maps
with an outdoor-focused social network that allows you to share your great
outdoor experiences. Yonder has two main components. The first is a profile
section that allows you to add outdoor "experiences" by snapping
a photo, geotagging it and adding a brief comment. You can add details
about the experience by selecting a category like hiking, backpacking
or climbing as well as adding tags to help others find your experience.
Each experience is added to Yonder for others to see. The other half of
Yonder is the fun of exploring, allowing you to view other‘s experiences
using GPS and a map to help pinpoint nearby shared content. You can look
at the shared images and take advantage of the features of the social
network by sharing the experience, adding it to a list, favoriting it,
navigating to it and commenting on it. You also can follow other Yonder
users and see where they are exploring.
ShopWell is a personalized nutrition app that helps users figure out what
foods are healthy for them based on their nutritional goals. While most
nutrition apps give you information based on an average score, ShopWell
allows you to enter a goal and receive a personalized score. When products
are scanned in the supermarket, they will be assigned red, yellow or green
to colorfully identify the best products for you while shopping. Based
on the USDA nutrition guidelines for a healthy diet, ShopWell works with
a registered dietitian who knows the ins and outs of food labeling and
stays up to date on current research on nutrition. This gives you the
most up to date information about each product, and allows you to choose
the healthiest options to reach your goals. With 1.3 million users, there
are many reasons this app can be helpful in your day to day life. Whether
you are a baby boomer who is worried about heart disease, a parent watchful
about food allergies or a teen beginning to understand the basics of healthy
eating, this app has beneficial, easy-to-use features.
