Torrance Memorial Medical Center has welcomed two distinguished community members to the Torrance Memorial Health Care Foundation board. Attorney Stevan Calvillo and Patricia E. Sacks, M.D., radiologist and director of the Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center at Torrance Memorial, will help continue the board's mission of developing funds to support health care services provided by Torrance Memorial Medical Center. This includes raising capital for construction of the new $450 million, 398,350-square-foot Main Tower, scheduled to open its doors in November of 2014.
"Stevan Calvillo returns to the Foundation Board for his second term. We are excited by his philanthropic knowledge and ability to generate ideas, and the opportunity to join forces with his family (The Graziadios)," said Laura Schenasi, executive vice president, Torrance Memorial Health Care Foundation. "Pat Sacks, M.D., is synonymous with passion and caring through her many years as a radiologist working with women diagnosed with breast cancer. She has served on other philanthropic boards and we look forward to her ideas and energy."
Stevan Calvillo – Calvillo brings a wealth of legal knowledge with nearly 40 years of law practice. A member of the State Bar of California, the Los Angeles Bar Association and the Southern California Media Association, he has represented numerous real estate developers, banks and title companies and currently owns Redondo Beach-based Calvillo & Meyer, LLP. He has tried and arbitrated more than 200 cases and successfully argued cases on appeal, both in the California appellate system and before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He also served as a Los Angeles Superior Court judge pro-tem for settlement in Long Beach, an arbitrator for the Long Beach Bar Association Attorney Client Fee Disputes and a court appointed mediator for the Los Angeles Superior Court. He graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history. He received his Juris Doctorate from Western State College of Law (now Thomas Jefferson School of Law). Calvillo also serves as the chairman of the Board of Visitors for Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management. He and his wife of 44 years, Alida, live in Rolling Hills. The couple has two grown daughters.
Patricia E. Sacks, M.D., Radiology – Sacks is founder and director of the Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center at Torrance Memorial. She originates from New York and graduated from Skidmore College with Bachelor of Arts degrees in biology and chemistry. Board certified in nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology, she began her professional career serving 11 years with Medford Radiology Group at Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital and Providence Hospital in Medford, Ore. in Medford, Ore. In 1981, she joined Torrance Memorial's department of Radiology where she has served as partner for 17 years. Her association and friendship with local businessman Vasek Polak resulted in the expansion of the breast center and establishment of the Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center at Torrance Memorial in 1992. It was the South Bay's first private breast center to be accredited by the American College of Radiology. Sacks also helped Polak realize his dream as they established the first breast diagnostic center in his native Prague of the Czech Republic. Sacks received her Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and USC School of Medicine. She is a Palos Verdes Estates resident and has two adult children and two grandchildren.
