Even though you have breathing problems, you have a lot of living to do—playing
with the grandkids, shopping, traveling and more.
With the help of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program of Torrance Memorial, you can
learn to breathe better. Whether you've been on supplementary oxygen for a while or you've
recently been diagnosed with lung disease, our outpatient program will provide:
- Training to help you manage your pulmonary health
- A commitment to helping you feel your best and live life more fully

- A personalized home program to keep you active
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
With our help, you don't have to be confined to home or miss out on
the pleasure of daily activities. You are a
good candidate for our program if you are living with:
- Asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema
- Restrictive lung disease
- Cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis
- Occupational or environmental lung diseases
- The need for therapy die to a lung transplant, lung reduction and/or lung
resection surgery
Improve Your Breathing
You'll learn many ways to
improve your breathing, such as:
- Breathing retraining
- Airway clearance techniques
- General muscle strengthening
- Physical conditioning
- Respiratory muscle conditioning
- Using oxygen and aerosol equipment
- Activities of daily living training
- Relaxation training
- Improving you independence and self-reliance
- Energy conservation and work simplification training
- Education on nutrition and medications
- Managing you breathing while traveling
A Personal Approach to Better Breathing

To make sure you receive the best possible care,
a team of pulmonary experts will treat you, including:
- Your attending physician
- An experience pulmonary rehabilitation therapist (respiratory care practitioner)
- Physical and occupation therapist
- A pharmacist
- A dietitian
Working together, this team will design a
personalized program for you education and therapy. You will:
- Enjoy a personalized program based on your exercise tolerance, laboratory
tests and the goals you wish to achieve
- Receive continual assessment of you progress
- Leave with a follow-up program designed to help you maintain your progress at home
- Be able to use our exercise equipment after you complete the program (for
a small fee)
A Schedule That Fits In With Your Life
We've designed our program to be
convenient and accessible. For your comfort, a family member or friend is welcome to come with you
at no additional cost. Our comprehensive,
eight-week program meets for two hours twice a week in the Rehabilitation suite on the third
floor the Torrance Memorial Specialty Center. It includes exercise sessions,
lectures and videotape demonstrations.
Support Group
For your continued improvement, the program offers a free monthly support
group, featuring expert guest speakers, up-to-date respiratory-care information,
activities and trips.
