Torrance Memorial’s Neurological and Stroke Rehabilitation (Neuro Rehab) Program helps patients with neurological impairments as a result of neurosurgery, neurological disorders, or injury to achieve their highest level of functioning.

Our team of outpatient rehabilitation specialists — which includes physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapists — are highly trained and experienced in rehabilitative care. Our specialists will work with your neurologist or neurosurgeon to develop a coordinated plan of care that promotes self-reliance and helps you achieve a successful reintegration at home, in the community, and at work.

Multidisciplinary Care

Our rehabilitation specialists work closely with other medical providers, including pharmacists, respiratory therapists, registered dietitians, palliative care specialists, and social workers to deliver coordinated, interdisciplinary rehabilitation care. Your team will work together to provide care that effectively addresses your physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being while improving long-term neurological outcomes.

Our Program

The goals of a neurological rehabilitation program include helping the individual to return to the highest level of function and independence, and improving the overall quality of life for that individual - physically, emotionally, and socially. A typical neurological rehabilitation program helps to accomplish and/or may include the following:

  • Assistance with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, bathing, using the toilet, handwriting, cooking, and basic housekeeping
  • Speech and swallow therapy
  • Counseling
  • Bladder and bowel retraining
  • Activities to improve control and muscle balance in the trunk, pelvis, and shoulder girdle
  • An exercise program
  • Social skills retraining
  • Balance fall prevention and gait training
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Education regarding the disease and disease process
  • Family and care giving training
  • Goal setting (short- and long-term) involving the individual and family members
  • Recommend adaptive equipment

Supportive Services

In addition to expert rehabilitative care, Torrance Memorial offers a full range of supportive services to assist you as you recover from or manage your neurological condition. Supportive services include:

  • Support groups. We offer support groups for Stroke Support, Parkinson's Support, Caregiver Support, Bereavement Support, Meditation Circle, and more.
  • Home Health and Hospice. Torrance Memorial Home Health and Hospice is California-licensed, Medicare-certified, and accredited by the Joint Commission. Our home health care team works with patients and their families to ensure they receive the best possible care and helps to coordinate other services and treatments as necessary.
  • Stroke education. Our specialists provide education and information to help patients and their loved ones recognize the signs of a stroke so they can seek immediate treatment.
