Maternity and Child Care Services
At Torrance Memorial, we pride ourselves on offering a special place for
moms and babies. We focus on providing a range of prenatal services and
resources to meet expectant parents’ many needs:
Our Maternity and Child Health services teams provide excellent care for
you and your family. Our physicians are board-certified and highly trained;
our nurses are certified in their specialties, passionate about the care
they provide and proud of the relationships they have built.
Torrance Memorial has a dedicated, in-house Laborist group, a service of
21 local physicians who provide 24/7 coverage to our Labor and Delivery
unit. This means all patients will have access to obstetric and gynecological
intensivists - from nurses to neo-natologists. We have teamed together
to ensure the highest patient safety and satisfaction.
Additionally, Torrance Memorial has made a commitment to ongoing learning
and improvement by placing Clinical Nurse Specialists in Maternal Child
Health service areas. Clinical Nurse Specialists are expert resources
for our nurses so they can continually improve their skills using evidence-based care.

Torrance Memorial has been named a Baby-Friendly Hospital by
Baby-Friendly USA. To achieve a Baby-Friendly designation, Torrance Memorial demonstrated
its ability to offer mothers the information, skills and support needed
to successfully initiate bonding and breastfeeding.
A maternity care facility can be designated as Baby-Friendly when it meets
the requirements created by the World Health Organization and adheres
to the “10 Steps of Successful Breastfeeding.” The steps include
- helping all mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth;
- showing mothers how to breastfeed and maintain lactation even if they are
separated from their infants;
- giving newborn infants only breast milk unless medically indicated;
- practicing rooming-in by allowing mothers and infants to remain together
24 hours a day;
- and encouraging unrestricted breastfeeding on cue.
