Stereostatic Breast Biopsy
One of the most valuable innovations in diagnostic procedures available
is the mammography-guided (stereotactic) breast biopsy. This outpatient
procedure uses digital mammography technology to precisely locate extremely
small irregularities in the breast. Tissue samples as small as two millimeters
- the size of the head of a pin - can be enough for an accurate diagnosis.
This minimally invasive technique only requires local numbing and allows
patients to resume normal activities the same day.
Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
Areas of concern identified during an ultrasound can be biopsied with ultrasound
guidance, using core needle biopsy techniques - an outpatient procedure
which only requires local numbing. A radiologist can remove several tissue
samples during a single procedure, which will then be reviewed by Torrance
Memorial pathologists. This precise technique can identify very small
areas of concern and gather information about breast health with the least
amount of invasiveness. Patients can return to normal activities immediately
following the procedure.
