Organization as the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) a clinical leader
of critical care areas of nursing practice. The specialized knowledge
and skills are used within three major areas of focus: patient direct
care, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization and systems. The
critical care CNS will be responsible for collaborating with members of
the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective,
evidence-based care strategies. The CNS is responsible for maintaining
current professional knowledge and competencies and contributing to the
advancement of the practice of nursing at the unit/system, local, state
and/or national level.
- Masters Degree in Nursing with a Clinical Nurse Specialist focus. If Master’s
Degree is not a CNS focus, a post master’s CNS certificate must
be obtained within 3 years of date of hire to maintain employment in this
- CNS certification from the CA Board of Registered Nursing.
Minimum 4 years recent clinical experience required
that includes 3 years in area of specialization. Recent clinical experience is defined as the last two years of full-time
experience or its equivalent as an RN in an acute care setting.
Clinical knowledge in specialty area.If hired in an area expanded beyond
primary clinical knowledge base, the candidate will be expected to demonstrate
clinical expertise in the practice area within one year.
Computer skills: Internet, email, word processing, PowerPoint and database
- National Certification in area of clinical specialty
- CNS experience within the past year
