Meet Connie Senner, one of the team members overseeing the new Main Tower construction. Connie works closely with construction managers Ken Boehling and Larry Rausch of Boehling Construction Management to make the tower rise.
Some of the biggest muscle behind the Tower's construction belongs to a woman: Connie Senner. When she started working for Torrance Memorial 20 years ago, she was overseeing the office construction for the physician practice management division. But when construction on the West Tower began, she transitioned full-time to become director of construction projects and threw all her energy into the hospital's refurbishment and master plan.
What is your day-to-day role in the tower construction?
"I am the owner's representative. I work with our construction managers, Ken and Larry, to ensure the project objectives are met, that decisions are made in the best interest of Torrance Memorial and that construction activities occur with patient care in mind. I am also the liaison between the field and hospital personnel and our neighbors in the community."
How many crew members are out there daily?
"We have about 50 workers on the job site, but at the height of construction we'll have about 500."
What phase is the construction in now?
"Until recently, you might say we've been `heading down' with construction activities. But at the end of October we finally started coming up-out of the ground-starting with the placement of structural steel."
What has been the most fascinating part of the process?
"That is a difficult question to answer because it seems that interesting things are happening constantly. Just watch our construction videos on the hospital website, and you'll see what I mean!"
Do you have any other fun-filled facts that the public might find surprising?
"The main tower will have 10,000 cubic yards of concrete as the mat foundation, a total of 4 million pounds of rebar in the building, 56,000 square feet of precast, 46,000 square feet of metal panels, 70,000 square feet of glazing systems, 10,000 square feet of tile and 760,000 square feet of interior painted surfaces."
