Proceeds from Honda's Evening Under the Stars with Kenny G Total 200,000 to Benefit Torrance Memorial Medical Center

Torrance, Calif., August 6, 2013 – A sell-out crowd of 1,000 community members gathered Saturday, July 20 at American Honda's Torrance headquarters to sample some of the South Bay's best cuisine at the 27th annual Honda Evening Under the Stars with Kenny G Gourmet Food and Wine Festival. Proceeds help fund construction of Torrance Memorial's new Main Tower and Pediatric Services.

"We're so honored to participate in and benefit from this exquisite community event," said Craig Leach, president and CEO, Torrance Memorial Medical Center. "This year Honda and the planning committee really outdid themselves and as a result the event earned the highest proceeds on record. We are very grateful to everyone who played a part in its success and making it truly an evening to remember."

Saxophonist Kenny G serenaded guests as he made his way toward the stage playing tunes from his award-winning albums. He also personally auctioned off the saxophone he designed himself for a winning bid of $7,500, with all proceeds donated to Torrance Memorial.

This year's silent and live auction featured a number of highly coveted items, including a lavish San Francisco weekend, a Hawaiian paradise escape, a ride on the Goodyear Blimp and a VIP table for 10 at Torrance Memorial's Holiday Festival Gala. These items were secured by "Evening Under the Stars" Committee members, American Honda and Luminaries, a group of parent volunteers whose children also volunteer for the hospital. In total, the auction raised $91,185.

Event guests sampled approximately 80 varietals of wine, while professional sommeliers from The Disneyland Resort educated guests about their samplings. The following restaurants and beverage partners offered their fare and tastings at the Festival:

2013 marks the eighth consecutive year that Honda has chosen Torrance Memorial as the event's beneficiary. During that time, it has raised nearly $900,000 through this time-honored event. American Honda created the Gourmet Food & Wine Festival in partnership with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce in 1987 as a way to bring corporate business, residents and local commerce together with city officials for a relaxing community celebration.

To date, Torrance Memorial has raised more than $137 million, more than half of its fundraising goal of $200 million, to construct the new Patient Tower. The $450 million, 398,250-square-foot Patient Tower is scheduled to open in November, 2014.
