Pediatric Burn Patients Run the Show

building miniature renditions of the new Patient Tower at torrance memorial medical centerWith construction of the nearly 400,000-square-foot tower in the background, Pediatric Burn Unit patients teamed up with workers from McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., to create their own rendition of the new hospital building using LEGOS®.

Among the patients was 5-year-old Robert Jones, who has been undergoing treatment for burn injuries in the Burn Unit. Another former Burn patient, Litzy Santos, 6, also participated in the mini building project with her sister Karime.

McCarthy workers joined the patients, donning construction gear and hard hats, to help with their building efforts from the site of the future Healing Garden. The workers invited Jones to give the command via two-way radio to complete the final cement pour, which fills in the seventh-story deck—the top level of the new Patient Tower. McCarthy has generously donated several sets of LEGOS® to the Pediatric Unit to help keep young patients entertained during their hospitalization.

Torrance Memorial is more than half-way finished with its $450 million new Patient Tower construction project, scheduled to open in spring 2015.

The Burn Unit will relocate to the new Patient Tower once construction is completed. Torrance Memorial has raised $123 million, more than half of its fundraising goal of $200 million, to build the new tower.
