The Gold Standard of Care for Heart Attack Patients

Performance Achievement Award seal

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is one of only 26 hospitals nationwide to receive the Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2012 from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry, as part of their ACTION Registry®–Get With The GuidelinesTM (GWTG) program.

The award recognizes Torrance Memorial’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that it has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care, as outlined by the American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the ACTION Registry–GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Award, Torrance Memorial followed the program’s treatment guidelines for eight consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90% for specific performance measures. Following these treatment guidelines improves adherence to ACC/AHA clinical guideline recommendations, monitors drug safety and the overall quality of care provided to ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI, a more severe type of heart attack) and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients (NSTEMI, a less severe type of heart attack).

“The number of acute myocardial infarction patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade, due to increasing incidents of heart disease and a large aging population. The time is right for Torrance Memorial to focus on achieving top-quality cardiovascular care by implementing these high performance guidelines that save lives,” says Mark Lurie, M.D., FACC, medical director of the Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.
