Obesity is a serious health epidemic affecting nearly 93 million Americans.
The journey to lose weight is challenging, but by understanding obesity
and the risks associated with it, you are on the right track!
What is Obesity?
Obesity is a condition in that is associated with having an excess of body
fat, defined by genetic and environmental factors that are difficult to
control when dieting.
How to Measure Obesity
Body Mass index, or BMI, is a tool used to measure obesity. An individual
is considered obese if he or she has a BMI greater than 30.
BMI is a good starting point when it comes to addressing weight. To measure
obesity, one calculates their BMI by dividing their weight in kilograms
by their height in meters squared. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s
weight in kilograms by his or her height in meters squared. Once you find
your measurement, you will want to find your weight classification that
is accompanied on the BMI chart or calculator, which are available at
a variety of online sites. If you find that you are at in an unhealthy
range, speak to your primary care physician.
Severe Obesity Health Risks
A variety of health risks are associated with obesity. There are over 40
known health risks associated with obesity, but the most common risks
include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease,
stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory
problems, and some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon).
An individual’s behavior, genetics and environment all play a role
in the onset of obesity. Behavior relates to one’s food choices
and level of daily physical activity. Although not everyone is predisposed
to obesity, genes can cause certain disorders which result in obesity.
Lastly, one’s environment has a huge impact on the reasons for their
excess weight. With the ability to drive everywhere, technology making
it easy to relax and remain inactive, and the convenience of fast food,
obesity is affecting more and more people every day.
