Update on Treatments for Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death worldwide. By the time it's detected, the underlying cause (most commonly atherosclerosis) is usually quite advanced, having progressed for decades. However, new drugs, treatments and procedures are improving our management of cardiovascular disease, from treating congestive heart failure and vascular heart disease, to utilizing angioplasty and stents. There are new drugs to prevent blood clots and emboli. There are also new medications to improve cholesterol and other lipid abnormalities that cause heart disease. Fighting obesity is a difficult battle. Where are we in 2012 and what does the future hold?
