If you are like many people over age 50, you have a special interest in maintaining your health and the quality of your life. That's why Torrance Memorial Medical Center established ADVANTAGE, a free network of health-related resources for people 50 and over.

ADVANTAGE Program Descriptions

Advance Directive for Healthcare workshop is offered free of charge to ADVANTAGE members and friends. Who will make decisions for you if you are unable to speak for yourself? Will your decisions be legally protected?

AARP Driver Safety Program class reviews essential driving concepts, updates participants on current laws of the road and teaches new techniques to help offset the effects of aging on your driving ability. If you are 55 or older, you may be able to save money on certain portions of your automobile insurance by completing this course.

Bones for Life uses gentle, safe and easy exercises to help prevent joint degeneration and is taught by a guild-certified Feldenkrais practitioner and registered physical therapist. The classes are offered in a series and meet once a week. Cost: $60 for 6 sessions.

Fall Prevention - Balance Improvement teaches skills that can assist in long-term improvements in balance skills using foot and posture exercises, stretching and coordination techniques, T'ai Chi principles, and stress reduction. Class is co-facilitated by registered physical and occupational therapists. Call for fee and dates

Grandparenting is a one-session class designed to help you prepare for the birth of your grandchild. Discussion topics will include your role as a grandparent, care of baby, medical updates and safety, (e.g., car seats, airbags and home childproofing). This class is offered six times a year. The cost is $15.00/person or $25.00/couple. Call (310) 517-4702 for dates and times.

Maximize your Memory is offered in collaboration with Torrance Adult School. This Series teaches you to stretch your mind with mental exercises including word games, trivia and other methods. Participants learn the differences between normal forgetfulness and abnormal memory loss as well as how to develop a healthy lifestyle that promotes good memory.

Medicare Education Topics pertain to Medicare, Medicare HMO's Part D Prescription Drug Care Coverage and supplemental insurance lectures are presented several times a year by a staff member from the Center for Health Care Rights. Appointments are also available for individual consultation. All services are Free.

Medications 101 Provides assistance to learn how to manage your medications, become aware of potential drug interactions and just how vitamin, herbal, and dietary supplements all fit in, Class is taught by a pharmacist on staff at Torrance Memorial.

Senior Fitness A variety of exercises and movement classes are available year-long to encourage activity and promote physical well-being. Several classes offer adaptive programs that accommodate ones's level of ability, whatever it may be.

Many other wellness opportunities plus classes are available through our Community Education Department.
