Patient Education

Patients who are scheduled for surgery and who choose not to have blood transfusion should seek care from a surgeon and hospital that practice Patient Blood Management. They can get the proper education on the things to be done in preparation for surgery.
  • A complete blood count (CBC) is obtained early (preferably 4 weeks) to be sure the patient has no anemia.
  • If anemia is present, it allows time to make diagnosis and treatment. The treatment of anemia is much improved with better and safer drugs.
  • The patient is also properly screened for any bleeding tendencies including discontinuing drugs that may cause bleeding.
  • The operation is discussed with the surgeon so that the patient clearly understands the surgery, the risk and possible complications.
  • The patient is encouraged to ask questions.
