The Road to Recovery
The Delpit Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a medically supervised exercise and wellness program for people who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, angioplasty or stenting. The goal of our program is to assist you in achieving your highest possible level of recovery so that you can reclaim your health and vitality. Participating in a cardiac rehab program allows you to take an active role in your treatment.
Recovery Team
The Cardiac Rehabilitation team of Registered Nurses are specially trained in exercise prescription and lifestyle modification coaching and will be with you every step of the way during your recovery. Working closely with you and your physician we will develop a recovery program based on your medical history and desired goals. The recovery program will include exercise therapy, risk factor intervention, education and emotional support.
Three-Phase Program
Phase 1
While you are still in the hospital following a heart attack or cardiac procedure, one of our Cardiac Rehabilitation nurses will visit you for a one-on-one evaluation. They will provide information, answer questions, address concerns and offer guidelines for your return home.
Phase II After you are released from the medical center, you will return to the hospital three times a week on an outpatient basis for cardiac-monitored exercise therapy, education and dietary counseling. Participants at this level are able to interact with others who have also experienced a cardiac event or life changing diagnosis.
Exercise
Learn how to exercise safely, strengthen muscles and improve stamina. Your exercise plan will be based on your level of recovery, ability, needs and interests.
Education
nderstanding your condition and cultivating ways to reduce your risk of future heart problems, such as heart healthy eating, reducing stress, managing medications, and creating a healthier lifestyle will be discussed and supported.
Support
Participants find the fun, non-intimidating and encouraging environment to be a beneficial part of their recovery.
Phase III
During the maintenance phase, you have the opportunity to continue an exercise program in a structured, medically supervised environment as long as is beneficial.
Fitness Program
Torrance Memorial's Specialty Center Fitness Program offers an exercise maintenance option which is open to patients who have graduated from our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, or Outpatient Diabetes Program.

Support Service
Undergoing a cardiac procedure can be a frightening experience. Patients are often anxious about the procedure, and nervous about the recovery process. To help ease your fears, Torrance Memorial offers "Heart to Heart," a patient visitation program, and the "Take Heart" support group. Through these programs, cardiac patients and their families can share their experiences and ease their worries.
Heart to Heart
A former heart patient who understands your concerns will visit you while you are hospitalized.
Take Heart
Facilitated by a former heart patient, this support group provides an outlet for discussion and a resource for useful information.
Getting Started
Patients play a crucial role in their own recovery, so it is important for you to become an active participant in your treatment. If you or a family member could benefit from any components of the Delpit Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Torrance Memorial, please speak with your physician. A doctor's referral is required for participation in this program.
