Breast Self-Examination Training
If you are a woman, you owe yourself a visit to the Torrance Memorial Breast Diagnostic Center for free breast self-examination training. A registered nurse who is a Certified Breast Self-Exam Trainer and specializes in all aspects of breast health. Classes are offered throughout the year. Free of charge but reservations required. The Torrance Memorial Health Education department offers a wide array of classes, activities and lectures to encourage wellness and healthy living.
Torrance Memorial Survivors Day Event
Every June the Torrance Memorial Cancer Institute offers a free event to celebrate cancer survivors in our community. The event includes a pasta dinner, speaker and patient recognitions and is open to cancer survivors in the community and their loved ones. The event in 2013 will be on Wednesday June 5 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the speaker will be Kyle Garlett, a 4-time cancer survivor who was the first heart transplant recipient to compete at ethe Ironman World Championship. Torrance Memorial Professional Education

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Torrance Memorial offers ongoing promotion of breast cancer awareness, screening and early detection. To learn more about your risk for breast cancer, lifestyle strategies that may reduce risk and recommended screening, contact the Cancer Resource Center at 310-517-4665. Through the Torrance Memorial Speakers Bureau, nurses with advanced training in breast health are available to provide lectures to community groups on breast cancer prevention, treatment and surivorship. Plan to attend the 7th annual event for cancer survivors and their loved ones. Hear expert speakers who will discuss the latest information and research on cancer survivorship issues including: survivorship care plans, psychosocial issues after cancer, cardiovascular health after cancer and cognitive changes after cancer.
UCLA's Young Breast Cancer Survivorship Program will host a special afternoon session from 1:15 pm - 3:30 pm. The session will cover various psychosocial issues such as: fear of recurrence, coping with the "New Normal" after treatment, relationships and communication and special emphasis on sexuality and intimacy.
