CT Lung Screening

Lung Screening Program

Torrance Memorial, at the forefront of cancer diagnostics, now offers a low-dose CT screening for those at increased risk for lung cancer.

Study Reveals Screening Benefits

Recently the National Cancer Institute released initial findings of its National Lung Screening Trial, a national research study that enrolled over 50,000 currently and ex-smokers with a high risk of development lung cancer. Analysis of the data gathered in this trial showed that significantly fewer study participants dies of lung cancer if they underwent low-does spiral CT (Computed Tomography) screening compared to participants who had a standard chest x-ray. The study strongly suggests that CT lung screening leads to early detection and better survival for those at risk for the development of smoking-related lung cancer.

Who Should Consider CT Scan Lung Screening?

If you are between the ages of 50 and 74 years and have a more than incidental smoking history, you should consider being screened.

Are There Any Risks to Being Screened for Lung Cancer?

There are some risks:

  • Not all cancers are detected by CT
  • The scan could result in a finding that leads to additional testing
  • Exposure to a small amount of radiation, although the benefit of early detection likely outweighs the risk of damage or injury the amount of radiation exposure that occurs during a CT

Screening Cost

The cost of the exam is $350. It is not covered by insurance so payment is due at the time of the exam. Physician referral is required.
