Cancer Resource Center

When faced with a cancer diagnosis, you or a loved one may feel overwhelmed by the challenge of finding the best possible care. The goal of the Cancer Resource Center is to help anyone - regardless of where they live or where they are getting their health care - to obtain the information they need to cope with a cancer diagnosis.

All services of the Cancer Resource Center are free of charge.

Services

Some of the services offered at the Cancer Resource Center include:

Consultation

Specially trained oncology nurses are available to meet with patients or their loved ones to answer questions about their disease and treatment. In simple language, the Cancer Resource Center nurses can explain what your diagnosis means, what treatments are available, options for obtaining the care you need, and how to manage symptoms caused by cancer and its treatment. Email and phone consultation is also welcomed.

Navigation

Assistance with obtaining appointments with Torrance Memorial-affiliated physicians and coaching on questions to ask your physician to make sure you get the information and treatment you need.

Resources

Connects patients to a wide variety of supportive resources both at the medical center, in the community and on the Internet.

Education

Community education activities include lectures and the Torrance Memorial Speakers Bureau, which arranges for Oncology Advance Practice Nurse Educators to deliver talks on cancer issues in the community at schools, civic organizations, and other public venues.

Referrals

The goal of the Cancer Resource Center is to help every cancer patient find the best possible care and that usually includes a search for physicians who fit your needs during cancer treatment. The center nurses can help you find the right cancer specialist, whether affiliated with Torrance Memorial or outside of the medical center.

Clinical Trials

The best treatment for some types of cancer may include a clinical trial. A clinical trial can offer access to medication or a treatment that would otherwise not be available. The Center nurses can provide information about clinical trials and locate FDA-approved studies for your specific type of cancer.

Support Groups

The Cancer Resource Center nurses can answer questions about cancer support groups, both on-site as well as cancer support groups in the community.
