Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology includes state-of-the-art equipment and computer technology for a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures. Torrance Memorial is proud to have endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), a relatively new procedure used to obtain tissue or fluid specimens from the chest. These specimens can be used to diagnose cancer, infections and other abnormalities. Torrance Memorial is one of only a few cancer centers in California to offer this diagnostic capability. EBUS is a minimally invasive procedure that is safe, very precise and accurate.

Compared to traditional methods of obtaining tissue specimens from the chest, advantages of EBUS include:

  • EBUS is minimally invasive, meaning that tissue and fluid specimens are obtained without an incision
  • Provides real-time imaging of airways, blood vessels, lungs and lymph nodes allowing the physician to safely guide the biopsy needle to exactly the right area of tissue
  • The high quality of the images provides improved visualization of hard-to-reach areas, expanded access and ability to locate smaller areas for tissue sampling
  • EBUS can be accomplished more rapidly compared to other biopsy techniques which allows for rapid tissue analysis by the pathologist and quick determination if more tissue is required
  • EBUS can be performed under conscious sedation or general anesthesia, making it safe for a wide range of patients
  • Because it is minimally invasive, patients usually experience a rapid recovery and can go home the same day
