The Heart of Our Service
Digital Mammograms are performed in a private room, this brief procedure uses low-dose x-ray to find abnormalities in the breast long before they are large enough to be felt. With consistent screening, a radiologist is able to compare results with past exam records to spot breast disease at its earliest and most treatable stage. For this reason, it is recommended that all women over the age of 40 receive a yearly mammogram to closely monitor any changes.
The total time for a mammogram appointment is around 30 minutes, and requires patients to undress only to the waist. While standing, a pair of smooth plastic plates compresses the breast to provide a clear image with lower amount of radiation exposure. Two views - horizontal and vertical - are captured during the procedure. While the compression period is short, some women find the exam slightly uncomfortable. Other women report feeling no discomfort at all.
The digital technology used in mammograms at Torrance Memorial is superior to older film-based mammography, allowing for more accurate reading and quicker results. Screening results are usually available the following day.
