Transference & Counter-Transference:
The Consciousness Needed by Client and Clinician;
Including Twelve Step Sponsors and Spiritual Directors

Tuesday, August 23, 2016
Check in: 8:30 am
Presentation: 9:00-10:00 am

This course will address the various complex relational dynamics that emerge for professional and paraprofessionals in the context of their relationships with clients as well as fellow interprofessional treatment team members. Team members often include psychotherapists, nurses, doctors, Substance Abuse counselors, AA Sponsors, and Spiritual Directors, among other health care providers. These often unconscious relational dynamics, understood as transference and countertransference, will be identified, explored and addressed in a manner that is meaningful, relational, intersubjective (Stolorow) and neurobiologically and spiritually based. Cues for identifying potentially disruptive transference dynamics will be offered.

Educational Objectives:

  • Define Transference/Counter-Transference from Inter-Subjective Approach to Treatment (Stolorow)
  • Describe Neuro-Psycho-Physiological and Spiritual processes of Transference/Countertransference
  • Identify the cues for emerging Transference/Countertransference dynamics in therapeutic & InterProfessional treatment team relationships
