The Joint Commission (TJC) is the independent nonprofit organization that accredits and rates United States hospitals. The accreditation of TJC and other accreditation organizations, is very important because hospitals that are not TJC accredited are prohibited from participating in the Medicare program, as well as most major health insurance and HMO provider networks.
In 2009, Torrance Memorial underwent a TJC accreditation survey which resulted in:
- Full accreditation for the medical center including home health and hospice.
TJC re-evaluates facilities either annually or every two or three years, depending on the outcome of the most recent survey. Because of Torrance Memorial's superior rating on our 2009 survey,
we are not required to be re-surveyed for 3 years.
In addition, Torrance Memorial is certified or accredited by several other national and state organizations including:
- American College of Radiology for Mammography Services
- American College of Radiology for Stereotatic Breast Biopsy and Ultrasound/Ultrasound Breast Biopsy
- American College of Radiology as a Breast Center of Excellence
- American College of Surgeons as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Center
- CLIA and American Association of Blood Banks for the clinical laboratory and blood bank
- Board of Registered Nursing Reviews, American Heart Association, Continuing Accrediting Agency for Clinical Science, and the California Medical Association for various education programs for hospital staff and physicians
