Supporting Our Community

Community access to quality healthcare services has been a top priority for Torrance Memorial Medical Center for more than 80 years. We evaluate the needs of our community on an on-going basis and plan for the future according to those needs. In keeping with our strategic mission, our Board-level Community Benefits Committee regularly reviews the medical center's Community Needs Assessment and makes recommendations that are the basis for this report.

Remaining strong and stable for the future is our foremost goal. We want to make certain that our community can continue to turn to us for the outstanding health services and vital community programs that have distinguished Torrance Memorial Medical Center since 1925. Keeping this care accessible to all is important to us as well.

Last year, Torrance Memorial Medical Center provided just under $54 million in Community Benefit and other significant financial contributions to members of its service area. Community benefit is defined as programs or activities that provide treatment or promote health and healing in response to an identified community need. Community Benefit programs must meet the following criteria:

Respond to a public health need
Involve education or research that improves overall community health
Respond to needs of special populations
Supply services or programs that would likely be discontinued if the decision was made solely on a financial basis because they operate at a financial loss

Beautifying Self Image

Woman to Woman is an image-enhancement program that helps women experiencing hair loss and other appearance changes from illness or its treatment.

Getting kids to eat their fruits and vegetables often ends up being a second job for parents. In order to help, a program called Healthy Ever After was created.

Helping Kids Manage Stress and Succeed

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is reaching out to local schools with experts providing tools to help children manage stress.

Charity Care

Our Charity Care Policy provides that all patients who have family incomes below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level qualify for medically necessary services at no charge.

For patients who have a family income between 200 and 350 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, we offer partial charity care and a flexible payment plan.

We also counsel patients and their families on how to qualify for financial assistance through government sponsored programs.

We also recognize that uninsured patients may require additional assistance. For this reason, we offer a discount of 81 percent off the hospital bill for all medically necessary services.

Public Access Defibrillator Program

As part of our service to the community, we provide Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) for our Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) Program.
